iOS 8.1.3 - New Configuration Options for Testing

Two days ago, Apple released the newest iteration of iOS 8 called iOS 8.1.3.  This update includes multiple changes behind the scenes, but the change that interested me was the line that references new configuration options for testing.  Given that little tidbit, I started a quest to find out exactly what those options included.  Turns out, Apple hasn't posted them to the web.

Hitting a dead end, I decided to turn to a couple of contacts who work for Apple.  After some researching, a Solutions Engineer sent back the following:

Here are the things iOS 8.1.3 includes for the education testing requirements:

iOS 8.1.3 includes the following new management features that can be suppressed on supervised iOS devices:
  • Dictionary
  • QuickType predictive keyboard
  • Spell check
  • AutoCorrection
To summarize, you can now configure the devices using Configurator or your favorite MDM solution to block features that could have made testing on an iPad unfair.  I'm glad I finally found the answer and hope that it helps districts as they prepare for Spring testing!

Student Technology Showcase Post

Each year, student teams and their teachers from around the state participate in the  AT&T/MACUL/MVU Student Technology Showcase , an event held at the State of Michigan Capitol Building. This year’s Student Technology Showcase took place on December 7, representing  34 schools  across Michigan.  It was an opportunity for teachers and students to present to lawmakers classroom technology projects designed and created by students at all levels of K-12 education.   Through these demonstrations our lawmakers see the importance of technology integration into the classroom firsthand, hearing straight from students themselves.  The event was also a chance for teams to move about the rotunda of the Capitol to explore the work of teams from other districts.  These new connections helped students grow their digital literacy knowledge while discovering the possibilities of other technology integrations into school projects and curriculum. For most ...

Tech Tip - Change the Ownership of a Google Calendar Event

Situation:   An administrative assistant creates all of the calendar invites for IEP meetings. Problem: The administrative assistant, as the creator / owner of the calendar event, must attend all meetings to allow entry for anyone outside the school domain. Solution: Change the ownership of the calendar event to someone attending the meeting, (perhaps the building principal).  Read on to discover how!   1. Start out by creating a new event.  This can be done by clicking the +Create button near the top left, or by clicking on the calendar on the date and time you would like the event to occur. 2.  Add a title, guests, video conferencing with Google Meet, and any other details you would like and click ‘save.’  Your event is on the calendar and now we can edit the ownership. 3. Now that the calendar invite is visible you will need to click on the invite one time so the panel to the right launches and then click on the three dots.  This will allow ...
